RB: What draws you to making/designing things?
HV: We love quirky locally made products and wanted to create our own. Having backgrounds in fine arts and fashion we are always inspiring and motivating each other to create interesting and unique items.

RB: What’s new for your line/business this spring?
HV: Our new line for spring is a series of bright coloured backpacks with some brand new prints. We also have some new clutches in a variety of colours, prints, and materials. As well we are adding an interactive element where customers can pick from an array of hand carved stamps and stamp boxers or other accessories.

RB: What’s in your designer/maker/creative plans for 2018 (new materials? New ideas? New places?):
HV: We are aspiring to use more recycled or environmentally friendly materials and add more hand stamped projects. We also aspire to have more community engagement with other artists and creators in Edmonton.

RB: Tell us about a few of your designer/maker/creative crushes:
HV: We love people who strive to be unique, who work with unconventional materials and play with texture like Alexander Mcqueen and Brandon Kee. We are also inspired by history, especially Old Norse sagas.

Getting Back To Nature With Copper Cherry

Jessica Nepton-Chayer, creator of Copper Cherry, started prototyping the bags in July of 2016. Copper Cherry bags are the beginning of a multifaceted concept brand that will revolve around Alberta and Canada life. The backpack line is designed with a natural aesthetic in mind that is functional for the city and for the mountain weekend trip. The everyday adventures, if you must. Q: What does it mean to be an Edmonton maker/designer/artist?
CC: That you make stuff in Edmonton. I’m super deep.

Q: What are your top 3 influences (artists, things, etc)?
CC: Influences. I’d have to start with my friends. All so talented, knowledgeable, and kind. They encourage me to stay weird and to not be afraid. I look up to the company Filson, I admire their timeless designs and long-lasting goods. And finally, I like working to Netflix and movies so they get an honourable mention.

Q: Favourite Bison item you’ve picked up at a previous fair?
This print from HamburgerHands; Mushroom Elk in latin. It’s da best.

All Copper Cherry products are handcrafted in Edmonton out of leather and canvas with beautiful copper rivets. Head to www.coppercherry.com to check out her full line and shop around!
