Explore Your Noir Provocative Side With Lord Violet

Nicola Inman, the independent designer of Lord Violet, explores alternative forms of glamour, influenced by BDSM, film noir, and dress-up. The abundant use of pleather, vinyl, and velvet pushes boundaries and incorporates sensuality into fashion. Provocative jewelry and accessories are also created to compliment the clothing. Lord Violet is pleased to deliver luxurious, yet affordable and practical quality designs to the local and international market. Nicola grew up in a household where DIY was the norm and crafting being the main form of entertainment. Sheltered from mainstream pop culture allowed her to develop her own aesthetic driven by queer feminist politics, and a fascination and celebration of sexuality. We are extremely excited to have Nicola back again for the November weekend of our market! Be sure to check out her instagram / twitter accounts for regular updates on her work and read on down below to see how she answered our Q&A:

Q: What does it mean to be an Edmonton maker/designer/artist?
LV: Lord Violet is a rebellion against the conservative political climate of Edmonton, being the capital city of a province with strong right wing history. Due to the pervasive conservative ideals, Edmonton has many flourishing alternative subcultures which seek to explore culture in unconventional ways. Frustrated with limited options for glamorous, yet practical garments in Edmonton, Lord Violet was created a line in hopes of filling this niche. Lord Violet seeks to empower femmes through subversive clothing.

Q: What are your top 3 influences (artists, things, etc)?
LV: My inspiration often starts with a material that I love. My best selling pieces have upholstery vinyl or metal mesh. I found all my bolo components in New York. At the time I didn't have a plan for them but I ended creating a piece I feel very connected to, being a prairie queer. I also love French new wave films and BDSM!

Q: Favourite Bison item you’ve picked up at a previous fair?
LV: Not going to lie - I come to the Bison for Bloom cookies; I buy a dozen every time!

Lord Violet is independently owned and operated out of Edmonton, Alberta circa 2016. Fabric and other garment supplies are Canadian sourced. You can find Nicola's full collection of work at Lordviolet.etsy.com.
